Travelling from Brazil: choose the hotel’s billing currency

Separate your BRL travel budget, the destination’s price and a merchant conversion offer before approving payment.

The essentials

  • Residence currency and card settlement currency can differ.
  • Inspect both amounts, the exchange rate and any markup.
  • Judge the trip’s cost from final receipts and settled entries.

Keep three currencies in view

Imagine a São Paulo traveller checking out of a Lisbon hotel with a €600 bill and a travel budget recorded in reais. The euro price, the card’s accounting currency and the BRL budget serve different purposes. Ask which currency the terminal will actually submit before confirming, even when the receptionist offers a familiar-looking total.

KAST displays supported stablecoin deposits as USD, and new RedotPay cards settle in USD. Brazilian residence does not make either balance a BRL card balance. Check the particular card in your app; an older RedotPay card may differ. A merchant’s USD conversion offer can therefore be relevant even though you normally think in reais.

Read the conversion before choosing

Visa’s DCC guidance calls for both currency amounts, the exchange rate and additional charges to be disclosed, with the choice left to you. If these are missing, request a clear quote or decline the conversion. Choosing the local currency leaves conversion to the card route; its applicable fees can still remain.

For illustration, a €600 bill offered at US$690 implies US$1.15 per euro. A separate hypothetical card conversion at US$1.12 would produce US$672 before fees, a US$18 difference. These invented rates demonstrate the comparison, not a promised saving. Add each route’s applicable charges before deciding; a reassuring currency label is not a price comparison.

  • Before approval: local amount, offered amount, rate and markup.
  • After payment: selected currency and final receipt.

Bring the evidence back to your BRL budget

Check the receipt before leaving reception. If its currency differs from your instruction, ask the hotel to explain and correct the transaction through its normal process. Save the original receipt and any correction together. Do not approve a replacement payment without understanding what will happen to the first charge and its reference.

After settlement, match the hotel’s final amount to the app debit and convert that actual total into your BRL budget using a recorded assumption. Track later refunds separately rather than erasing the purchase. This preserves any difference in conversion or retained fees and shows what the holiday ultimately cost, without guessing a Brazilian tax rate.
