The essentials
- CoDi turns an accepted payment request into an electronic transfer.
- Do not automatically apply card rewards or refund assumptions to a QR payment.
From request to transfer
Banco de México describes CoDi as a mobile platform for payments and collections through electronic transfers. A seller creates a request and the buyer accepts it. The QR interface therefore does not, by itself, establish an international card transaction. Start by asking which account supplies the funds.
At a fictional café
Imagine a café accepts either a card or CoDi for the same bill. Your card app advertises rewards, while your banking app offers a CoDi transfer. Multiplying that transfer by the card’s reward rate mixes two different arrangements. Instead, make one line for each route: amount debited, any applicable benefit, and the service to contact if something goes wrong.

Visitors should start with app support
Owning a foreign card or a crypto wallet alone does not establish CoDi access. Check the participating institutions listed by Banxico and the functions your own provider supports. Ask the shop which methods it accepts, then verify the recipient and amount before approval. There is no reason to send identity documents to an unverified account-opening intermediary just to try an unfamiliar QR.
