Travel currency choices: compare local currency with DCC

Separate the terminal’s conversion offer from your won travel budget when leaving Korea with a dollar-billed card.

The essentials

  • Local price, card billing currency and won budget are separate layers.
  • Inspect both DCC amounts and the rate, then make your own choice.
  • An illustrative conversion is not a promised settlement rate.

A Korea resident can face three currencies

Imagine shopping in Tokyo at a yen price, paying with a dollar-billed card and keeping your personal travel budget in won. The price currency, card billing currency and budget currency are different. Familiar USD or KRW appearing on a terminal does not establish that the offered conversion is good value.

Visa describes DCC as conversion offered by a merchant or ATM. Inspect the displayed amounts, exchange rate and markup before choosing. Identifying who performs the conversion makes it easier to understand why “my card uses dollars, so press dollars” is an incomplete rule, even when the displayed total looks comfortably familiar.

Hypothetical comparison: two routes for ¥10,000

This table provides neither a current exchange rate nor a specific card fee. Assume a ¥10,000 local-currency payment is estimated at $70 before provider costs, while the terminal offers $74 through DCC. The starting difference is $4, or approximately 5.7% of $70; every figure is hypothetical.

Add each route’s actual card costs separately before making a final comparison. Choosing local currency does not remove all conversion expenses, and a DCC amount does not establish that every additional charge is included. If you cannot verify alternatives at checkout, avoid accepting an unclear conversion offer and retain the receipt for later review.

Separate checkout checks from your trip accounting

Before confirming, check that the final screen shows your chosen currency, then inspect the receipt for the same choice. Ask the merchant immediately if another currency was selected without a clear explanation. Linking the local price, receipt and card entry to one order is more reliable than reconstructing the choice from memory later.

For your travel budget, convert the settled card amount into won using a recorded rate and date. That personal accounting conversion is different from accepting DCC at the terminal. If your itinerary covers several cities, group payments by local currency; this helps distinguish extra shopping from conversion differences when explaining a budget overrun.
