Calculate cashback after caps, credits and peso spending costs

A reward percentage becomes useful only after checking eligibility and what the credit can buy.

The essentials

  • Separate cash, spending credit and points
  • Run one explicitly hypothetical calculation
  • Reconcile a real month before upgrading

Separate cash, spending credit and points

For a hypothetical Mérida household comparing rewards, three labels can describe different things: cash, credit for future card purchases and points. Record the redemption restrictions beside the advertised percentage. A credit you cannot withdraw is worth counting only to the extent that you can use it for purchases you already planned.

RedotPay Pro’s checked terms describe USDs for future card spending, a monthly cap and expiry after 30 days. KAST’s fee page separately lists USD cashback and KAST Points. Do not merge these reward types into one cash percentage or assume that a reward remains usable indefinitely after it appears.

  • Identify the reward’s actual spending restrictions.
  • Apply the cap before subtracting costs.
  • Value expired or unusable credit at zero.

Run one explicitly hypothetical calculation

Use illustrative inputs, not a provider quote: MXN 10,000 of eligible spending, 3% nominal rewards, a MXN 200 reward cap, MXN 150 in purchase and funding costs, and MXN 80 of allocated plan cost. Gross rewards are capped at MXN 200, so the result is MXN 30 below zero.

If only half that credit can actually be used before expiry, count MXN 100 instead and the same example becomes negative MXN 130. Keep all inputs in one currency using a recorded conversion assumption. A high headline rate cannot overcome a cap or turn unwanted extra purchases into savings.

Reconcile a real month before upgrading

Keep eligible purchases, excluded purchases, returned orders, credited rewards and used rewards in separate columns. Refunds may reverse rewards, so an earlier reward notification is not your final monthly benefit. Allocate an annual membership fee across the period you are evaluating, while remembering that the payment may have been collected upfront.

Use that completed month to compare a paid tier with the plan you would otherwise keep. Count only additional usable benefits and additional costs. If you shop mostly with a physical card, do not assign a mobile-wallet-only reward to those purchases simply because the account also has a phone wallet enabled.
