Ask about the deposit before arrival
For a hypothetical weekend in Cancún, the booking confirmation shows MXN 6,000 paid in advance. That does not establish the amount required at reception. Ask the hotel whether it accepts your card type for incidentals, needs a physical card in the guest’s name and will authorize an additional deposit.
KAST’s help confirms that hotels and rental companies may hold more than the purchase amount. It does not establish a universal deposit for Mexican hotels. Get the property’s amount, currency and expected release process in writing; acceptance of an online reservation does not guarantee acceptance for a reception-desk guarantee.
- Confirm physical-card and guest-name requirements.
- Reserve balance for incidentals and other spending.
- Save the release or cancellation reference.
Keep the hold separate from your trip budget
Suppose the hotel confirms a hypothetical MXN 2,000 incidental hold and you need another MXN 1,500 for meals. Having only the meal budget available is insufficient for both purposes. Add the hotel’s confirmed requirement to planned spending and any applicable conversion costs; do not count the same balance twice.
At reception, review any choice between MXN and the card’s currency. Merchant conversion is a separate decision from the deposit size. Visa’s DCC guidance explains the currency choice; choosing MXN avoids that merchant conversion, while your card’s own non-USD charges may still apply to the eventual purchase.

Reconcile checkout before reporting a duplicate
At checkout, ask for the final folio and the status of the original authorization. A pending deposit and a settled room or minibar charge can appear together without proving two completed purchases. Compare references and status, and ask whether the property released, adjusted or completed the original hold.
Keep the property’s dated confirmation with the app screenshots. A released authorization and a refund of a settled charge follow different processes, so do not apply an ordinary refund timeline automatically. If the balance remains unavailable, ask official support to trace the specific authorization; keep another payment method for the journey home.
