Taiwan hotel and car deposits: budget for held funds

Plan a Taiwan road trip around deposit requirements, available balance and a separate backup card.

The essentials

  • Confirm the desk’s requirements for the exact card product.
  • Add simultaneous holds to the spending budget.
  • Verify release in the app after checkout or return.

Ask the branch before the trip

For a family weekend from Taipei to Tainan, a paid booking is only one part of preparation. Ask the hotel and rental branch which card types they accept for the security deposit, whether the named guest or driver must present a physical card, and whether that card must match the reservation. Save their written answer with the booking.

Name the actual issuer and product when asking; a network logo or successful online reservation does not answer the deposit question. Request the expected hold amount, currency, any additional authorization during the stay and the branch’s release procedure. If a requirement remains unresolved, arrange an accepted alternative before travelling instead of depending on an explanation at the counter.

Model the overlap, not only the final bill

Use hypothetical figures to test your budget: a NT$6,000 hotel hold, a NT$10,000 car deposit and NT$4,000 of planned purchases could require NT$20,000 of availability at the same time. These are invented planning amounts, not typical Taiwan merchant deposits. Substitute the figures supplied by your own hotel and rental branch, and allow for the card’s currency conversion.

RedotPay describes an Authorized transaction as a temporary hold before final processing. That distinction matters because a hold can reduce what is available for the next purchase without being the final travel cost. Do not count expected release money as available today. If the app and desk show different amounts, collect both records before approving another deposit attempt.

  • Ask: accepted product, physical-card requirement, name match.
  • Budget: simultaneous holds, final purchases, conversion buffer.
  • Backup: separately carried card with confirmed usable funds.

Follow the release after coming home

At checkout or vehicle return, obtain the final bill and written confirmation of any release request. Compare the settled purchase with the original hold so you can explain whether one amount remains reserved or two charges actually settled. Ether.fi labels pending funds as reserved; its status guidance helps distinguish that from a completed purchase or a refund still in progress.

Keep the backup card usable until all holds have been resolved, especially if another booking begins immediately. Escalate a missing release with the merchant’s reference and issuer transaction details. Avoid promising yourself a universal release deadline: a cancelled authorization and a merchant refund have different processes, and the reviewed guidance does not establish that every Taiwan hotel or rental branch uses identical timing.
