The essentials
- Use a trusted device to freeze the card and secure the phone.
- Card freezing does not revoke blockchain token approvals.
- Report suspicious activity with references, never secret credentials.
Secure the card and device
If your phone disappears during a Taipei MRT commute, use a trusted second device to reach the issuer and your phone account. Do this while arranging lost-property help, rather than waiting for the handset to be found. Keep a separately carried payment method available for the journey home; a card stored only on the missing phone cannot serve that purpose.
Ether.fi provides Cards → Edit Card → Freeze Card; RedotPay provides Card → Freeze. Confirm the resulting status or contact official support if you cannot sign in. For iPhone, Apple’s Lost Mode suspends Apple Pay cards; Android users can follow Google’s Find Hub instructions to secure the device. Verify the requested action has taken effect where a status is shown.
Keep card controls separate from wallet permissions
If you also used a self-custody wallet on that phone to fund the card, review that wallet as a separate account. Freezing the issuer’s card does not remove a smart contract’s token allowance. MetaMask distinguishes disconnecting an app from revoking its approval: disconnecting alone leaves existing token permissions in place. This review concerns the funding wallet, not eligibility for a MetaMask card.
From a secure device, inspect recent activity and the approvals on each network you actually used. Follow your wallet’s official instructions to remove permissions you no longer trust. If a recovery phrase or private key was exposed, permission cleanup alone is insufficient; follow the provider’s compromised-wallet guidance. Do not paste secrets into a support chat or a “recovery” link received by message.

Rebuild access with a record of the incident
Record the time you noticed the loss, the freeze confirmation and any unfamiliar transactions. Send the issuer the merchant, date, amount and relevant reference through its official channel, without full card credentials. Distinguish a pending entry from a settled charge when asking for investigation. Keep screenshots and case numbers so follow-up does not depend on memory during a stressful day.
Before resuming everyday spending, restore account access on a trusted device, confirm the card’s status and review services that still hold its details. Cancel unwanted subscriptions with their merchants separately. Store your recovery instructions and issuer contact route somewhere accessible without the phone. A short rehearsal while at home in Taiwan makes the next interruption easier to manage without moving money in a hurry.
- Immediately: issuer freeze and device protection.
- Then: transaction review and separate wallet-permission check.
- Before reuse: trusted access, card status and saved-payment review.
