The essentials
- Compare the final spendable balance, including conversion, transfer and loading costs.
- Match the asset, network, address and any memo before sending crypto.
- Separate the card’s base currency from your funding currency and the merchant’s currency.
Map your funding route
Write down each step before moving money: source account → receiving wallet → conversion → card balance → merchant. A crypto deposit reaching an app does not necessarily make the same amount available on its card. Some products require a separate prepaid top-up; others convert an eligible balance when you spend.
Compare routes for the same starting amount and desired spending currency. Record what leaves the source, what arrives, any minimum, and whether the quoted charge is deducted or billed separately. A route with no deposit fee can still have a withdrawal charge or a worse conversion quote.
Verify the network before comparing its fee
Open the recipient’s deposit screen for the exact asset and network. Match those details at the sending platform, including the address and any required memo or destination tag. A familiar token ticker or a similar-looking address is not sufficient evidence that a transfer route is supported.
For a first transfer, a small test above the deposit minimum can expose mistakes before a larger send. Allow for its extra fee. Check whether gas needs a separate native-token balance, and distinguish blockchain confirmation from the provider crediting funds. Do not repeat a pending transfer merely because the app has not updated.

Work out the net spendable balance
This is an illustrative calculation, not a provider quote: start with crypto valued at USD 1,000 using your chosen reference rate. Assume a USD 3 transfer deduction, then a 1% conversion cost on the remaining USD 997, and finally a USD 2 loading fee.
The resulting card balance is USD 985.03: total funding cost is USD 14.97, approximately 1.50% of the starting value. If a quote already includes its spread, do not subtract that spread again. Merchant currency conversion and later card charges are outside this example.
| Illustrative step | Amount in USD |
|---|---|
| Starting reference value | 1,000.00 |
| After transfer deduction | 997.00 |
| Conversion cost: 1% × 997 | −9.97 |
| Loading fee | −2.00 |
| Spendable card balance | 985.03 |
Read the terms for your issuing country
The same brand can offer different base currencies, funding methods and fees across countries. Crypto.com’s EU/UK instructions, for example, specify EUR for EU cards and GBP for UK cards. This is a regional example, not a rule for every crypto card or a promise of eligibility.
A customer earning PLN and using a EUR card should count the PLN-to-EUR funding conversion, then any conversion when a merchant charges another currency. Apply the same reasoning to BRL, KRW, TWD or PHP income: your interface language does not determine the card’s settlement currency. Check the local agreement and live quote.
Check the purchase and keep the evidence
At a foreign merchant or ATM, distinguish local-currency billing from dynamic currency conversion (DCC). A home-currency offer can include the merchant’s own exchange rate and markup. Compare the disclosed amount and fees; selecting local currency leaves conversion to the card’s applicable process and does not itself remove issuer fees.
Save the funding quote, transfer reference, credited balance and purchase receipt. Reconcile them with the final posted transaction rather than only a pending authorization. Before repeating the route, check whether the amount, country, asset or fee schedule has changed; a previous successful top-up is useful evidence, not a permanent price guarantee.
