Bizum meets MB WAY: why friends can split a bill across different payment apps

A background look at the payment links between Spain, Andorra, Portugal and Italy. The rollout began in 2025; this is an explainer, not a new launch announcement.

The essentials

  • Participating services can connect even when friends use different apps.
  • Separate expansion plans from the features your bank supports today.
  • A transfer to a friend does not establish acceptance at every shop.

A dinner bill crosses a border

Imagine dinner in Lisbon with a friend from Spain. One person pays a €60 bill, and the other owes €30. These are illustrative amounts. If each person has to install another app, register a new account and learn a different checkout simply to settle that small debt, the payment becomes a bigger task than the arithmetic.

EuroPA tackles that friction by connecting familiar national services. Bizum announced the gradual international rollout linking Bizum, BANCOMAT and MB WAY on 31 March 2025, initially covering Spain, Andorra, Italy and Portugal. The interesting change is that people can keep a familiar interface while the services behind it become more connected. This is background to an existing development.

Different apps, a shared connection

Bizum’s current international guide describes sending money to contacts in Portugal and Italy through the banking app and a mobile number. The recipient does not necessarily use Bizum. That does not mean every foreign phone number can receive a transfer: the services must participate, and your bank must support the relevant route. Check the actual option in your own app.

This changes how to read payment culture. Countries do not have to adopt one identical consumer brand before people can exchange money more easily. Familiar local products may remain visible while connections improve underneath. Equally, a familiar logo tells you little about your particular bank’s limits or charges. Read those conditions rather than inferring them from the alliance’s name.

Separate domestic scale from cross-border use

In its January 2026 review of 2025, Bizum reported more than 1.237 billion total transactions and more than 69,400 transactions through the cross-border interconnection. A large established domestic audience does not automatically produce an equally large international habit. The figures describe different scopes, so reading the period and the definition matters more than placing two big numbers beside a logo.

Return to the illustrative dinner: can your bank send to your friend’s service, is the displayed recipient correct, and what amount will leave the account? These small questions make the connection useful. Market size is interesting background, but it cannot replace checking the specific transfer you are about to authorize or confirming that your friend received the agreed share.

Keep transfers and merchant payments distinct

Do not turn a story about settling up with friends into a claim that every overseas merchant accepts the same method. Person-to-person transfers and retail checkout are different use cases. For a trip, check the merchant’s actual payment options and your bank’s instructions. An alliance announcement can explain the direction of travel without guaranteeing every possible transaction along the way.

Bizum’s security guidance asks users to read and check the information before validating an operation. Authentication inside a banking app does not make an unfamiliar request trustworthy. Enjoy the simpler connection, but keep the human decision visible: who is receiving the money, why are you sending it, and does the confirmation match what you actually agreed?
